The small delicatessen shop that is located
immediately next to the roomy gourmet restaurant under the same name (Trattoria
Pomo D'Oro) seems almost invisible to the eye in the busy city centre of
Budapest. However, if the person who happens to be erring around decides to
take a look inside, the little store reveals its array of Italian flavors and
fragrances. All the people that I have spoken with said that Italian cuisine is
not simply a field of gastronomy: it is a lifestyle; a way of experiencing and
enjoying the savor of life as well as acknowledging a long history of
tradition. Gastronomia Pomo D'Oro with its cheerful and skilled staff,
hospitable atmosphere and a wide variety of quality ingredients completely
corresponds to the challenge of smuggling the feeling of "Dolce Vita"
into our otherwise gray and eventless life.
Prosciutto! Pomo D'Oro offers a large
selection of hams and cold cuts of multiple regions of Italy from the famous
Parma, through the exquisite Tuscany, to the beautiful Val Gardena in Northern
Italy. There are two major types of hams a customer can choose from: smoked and
cooked. Furthermore, we can also browse the range of sausages from different
culinary regions and specially treated meat products (for carpaccio, for
example).
Formaggio! This store is excellent not only for those who are searching for new and special types of cheese, but also for those who want to have fresh Mozzarella or Ricotta on their table from traditional Italian producers. The key terms here are always: fresh, original, and good quality food within reasonable prices. Nothing tastes like real fresh Parmesan melting on the top of a plate of hot Fettuccini Alfredo!
Pasta! Are you bored of wandering in
supermarkets where all signs shout "Barilla!" when you just want to
eat a real Spagetti? Linguini, Fettuccini, Pappardelle, Tagliatelle,
Cannelloni, Fusilli, Penne, and Rigatoni, they can all be found in Gastronomia
Pomo D'Oro exported from Italian pasta manufacturers. I also would like to
emphasize that as well as the dried versions, the shop offers numerous types of
freshly made pasta that is always incomparable to any ready-made product.
Olio, Vino e Tutti! I believe that the most
important reason why we should visit this shop is because of its excessively
good quality fresh olive oil. This is an ingredient that a progressive kitchen
can never lack, and if we can, why shouldn't we get the best out of it? When I
first visited the shop they had three big cans at the back, labeled Liguria,
Puglio, and Toscana, but on their website they also mention shipping oil from
Sicily, too. Apart from oil, we can also find many brands and types of vinegar,
traditional marmalades and jam, tomato sauces and passatas, biscuits, and
coffee specialties. There is an immense selection of wines and Italian
alcoholic beverages that we can serve with a good Italian meal. Finally, the
staff bakes fresh Italian style pastry every day and makes sandwiches,
antipasti, and pizza that the customer can take home or taste right there at
the back of the shop at comfortable little tables.
I believe that Gastronomia Pomo D'Oro is one of the few places in Budapest where we can find the best ingredients to make real Italian food. It seems small and insignificant from the outside, but the real concept of cooking lies in tiny details. Gastronomia Pomo D'Oro represents a little island of Italy in the Hungarian capital.
